I think one of the causes behind Jaime’s problem with expressing himself is the environment he’s in. He’s surrounded by comedy and comedians, and comedians razz each other. It’s just who they are, and it doesn’t come from a bad place, it’s how they have fun. It’s a big part of his dynamic with Sean, even. But with Jaime’s personality, which tends towards the nervous and insecure on it’s own, the razzing style of interaction really comes into play. Let’s be honest, he’s an easy target sometimes.

So I think he starts to internalize it and becomes worried about expressing himself sincerely because he doesn’t want to get singled out and made to look and feel foolish. So his trouble expressing himself is compounded, making him even less inclined to want to be sincere and put himself out there.

P.S. Has Chris Gethard ever been a guest? He would be a perfect addition to an introspective episode like this.

James, I’ve listened to every episode of the Loshopo. I’ve noticed a trend in these feelings you are having. Sometime around season 4 (I think) you talked about being overwelmed with work and especially emails. At least once in every season since then you describe the same feelings. Perhaps you could seek employment in a different area. Maybe a position at a different comedy club. Personally, I think with your love and knowledge of music, you would be great at booking live concerts. Sometimes we have to take a step back to move forward. Do it while you’re still young. Good luck.

Wow, you guys have been getting into a lot more personal emotional stuff lately. It’s been very interesting. Jamie, you should listen to your friend Vanessa’s recent episode of pop my culture with Dee Wallace. She said some stuff that seemed relevant to me. Anyway, i’m a stranger but i’ve been listening for years and i feel like i know you guys. I love all of you and I encourage you to love yourselves a lot because you’re really cool people!

  5. Ryan Dubois says:

Great episode! I like these more serious ones. Of course keep the funny ones coming as well.

  6. HF Concorde says:

Outstanding episode. Funny and moving. And Jamie talked honestly about issues like a normal human being–very, very refreshing and interesting.

I think you nailed it! It’s a big part of it anyway. I am surrounded by comedians all day every day, it’s my life, so that alone isn’t the issue. I think it goes back to the genesis of the podcast and where I was in my life and my insecurities then, and being on a podcast and trying to hold my own with Sean and Eddie, who I’d looked up to, which compounded my insecurities further. It’s one thing to be razzed, another by people you look up to. I agree Chris would be a fantastic guest!

Love the new shirt logo, but–and I hate to even ask this given how much shit Jamie (or whoever is responsible now for creating shirts) gets for taking forever to make T shirts available–will they ever be available in another color? That gray is kinda bland.
